Every tree in this painting was found, not placed.
I built up the texture first, layers of paint, material, and mark, then worked back in with negative painting to reveal the forms hiding inside. The forest emerged the way real forests do: slowly, on its own terms, full of color that has no business being there and yet belongs completely. Red that should not be bark. Blue that should not be shadow. Yellow that has no name. This is what it feels like to be inside something that is completely, unapologetically alive.
