A True Story of Everlasting Love

Medium: Oil, Mixed Media on Canvas

Sun of June is inspired by the heart-wrenching poem Sun of June by the renowned Georgian poet, Galaktion Tabidze. The poem holds a deeply personal story - one of love, longing, and profound loss. In 1929, Galaktion's wife, Olga Okujava, was arrested by the Soviet regime and forcibly resettled in Uzbekistan. Her separation from him marked a painful chapter in their lives, and Galaktion’s love for her was unyielding, even in the face of the oppressive political climate. He was even prohibited from sending her letters.

In his poem, Galaktion writes a prayer, asking the Grail to protect her with wings, as someone he loved deeply and cherished. His words, "Sun of June, sun of June, I will kneel and meet the Grail in prayer," reflect the anguish and devotion he felt for Olga. In 1941, Olga was executed under a death penalty. This story became a profound source of  inspiration for this artwork.

In Sun of June, I sought to capture the essence of this deep emotional connection. The figure of the woman in the artwork, sitting serenely with her black hair and flowing dress, embodies the purity of love and the quiet strength found in devotion. The wind blowing through her hair and the warm red sun on her back symbolize the protective wings Galaktion so poetically wished for, wrapping her in safety and peace despite the harsh realities of their separation.

The Georgian alphabet, with its unique and ancient beauty, is integrated into the piece, representing the power of words and the lasting imprint of Galaktion’s love. This artwork is a tribute not only to the poem itself but to the enduring love and sacrifice that defines the story behind it.

Sun of June invites viewers to reflect on the timeless themes of love, loss, and the deep connections that persist even in the face of adversity.
